Just under a decade before Jane Eyre’s departure from Lowood school launched one of the most famous romances in Victorian fiction, Charlotte Brontë imagined Miss Caroline Vernon’s flight from boarding school into “fashionable society.” In this manuscript, we can see Brontë developing the adventuring girl-scholar archetype that brought each of her best-selling novels to life.
