Hurston's autobiography, Dust Tracks On a Road, is representative of women’s attempts to exert authority to tell their own stories and to have those stories taken seriously. The members of the Women’s Study Club who wrote their names on the flyleaf of this copy suggest a community of female readers practicing literary criticism on their own terms.
