The Case of the Forgery That Wasn't

A Titanic victim's favorite book--a novel that belonged to one of the most powerful literary women in Elizabethan England--has long been regarded as one of Harvard's most notorious forgeries.

The Secret Codes of Lady Mary Wroth

In 2019, I discovered a 400-year-old book with a cryptic cipher on its cover. It belonged to the first female English novelist, Lady Mary Wroth. Watch me decipher the meaning of this cryptic symbol and unravel the story of love and loss it conceals in this talk at the Grolier Club in NYC.

The Secret-Seeker
Harvard's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences profiles my research on Renaissance ciphers, March 2022.

The Renaissance was a time fraught with danger and secrecy. Kings, writers, magicians, and thinkers used ciphers, or secret writing systems, to conceal sensitive information. When these codes come to light, they bring us nose-to-nose with the ghosts of 500 years ago.
